Friends of the Elderly Primary School Programmes

Friends of the Elderly Primary School Programme

Friends of the Elderly invite Primary School teachers to open up communications lines between the young and elderly by introducing children to the Friends of the Elderly Primary School Programme. From first class onwards children can explore their own past and that of their families. We believe that the activities described below will help children to develop a sense that are part of what has happened in the past. By listening to people who ' saw it with their own eyes' children can develop a sense of time and feel part of history and history in the making.

Friends of the Elderly Primary School Programme

Activities include:

The Friendship Card activity. Children are asked to make a Friendship Card for an elderly person. Friends of the Elderly will post them as birthday cards or get well cards to elderly people who live alone and are housebound.

The My Elderly Friend story activity. Children are asked to write about a real or imaginary elderly friend.

The In My Day school visit. The teacher invites an elderly person to speak to the children about "how life was when I was your age."

Individual, class and school year certificates of merit signed by Aine Brady Minister for Older People and Health Promotion will be issued by Friends of the Elderly on completion of the programme.
